I had the same sentiment as you; I didn't really look forward to FF13 like the previous ones until I saw the Chocobo in Sazh's afro and was like I MUST GET THIS GAME.

ER, as soon as Sazh' chocobo appeared I realized he was the best looking man in video games, and was probably going to be one of my favorite characters of all time.

EVERYTHING he's done since that has only improved him.

(His kid, his argument on death, his piloting skills, the goofiness is meh though...)

It's really going to go down between him and Cyan.
